Behavior Change Communicator |
| |
As a second time Peace Corps volunteer serving in Kenya, my job is to work with the Deaf community as a Behavior Change Communicator. The overall objective of my work is to ensure that Deaf Kenyans minimizes their risk of exposure to HIV/AIDS by educating them about its transmission and prevention. Drawing from my background in curriculum design and classroom instruction, I am helping to develop educational materials such as posters, videos, and interactive DVDs. I also teach Life Skills and Reproductive Health in the classroom.
To date, I have worked together with two other Peace Corps volunteers in the BCC program to develop an instructional poster for the families of Deaf children. The purpose of the Survival Signs Poster for Families of Deaf Children is to give parents and their Deaf child a tool by which to initiate dialogue in the home. We designed the poster to allow for clear and easy use and to meet a variety of language needs, including low literacy, Kiswahili, English, and Kenyan Sign Language.
Stay posted for updates on future projects as I continue my service in Peace Corps Kenya.
