Volunteer, Mazingira Group |

This Kenyan community-based group conducts a number of agriculture and food-production centered activities, all of them addressing environmental problems, poverty issues, and HIV/AIDS within the rural, Western province community of Mumias. As a volunteer in the same community, have participated in and contributed to their projects during my stay here.
Their mission is "to promote sustainable natural resource utilization; strengthen the capacity of grass-root communities; and enhance recognition of benefits of sound environmental management in community development. "
Some of their projects include:
- Production Extension Work: agriculture, beekeeping, fish farming, tomato production
- Value-added Food Production: cakes, donuts, juices, flours both for income-generationg and community consumption
- Horticulture promotion: encouraging families that traditionally focus on growing sugar cane as a cash crop to also designate space for subsistence vegetable gardening
