The Community Farm and City Market Project was designed to provide land and other resources for local urban growers to produce and sell their fresh products at local farmers markets. There were over 35 households using the community garden space, including more than a dozen Montagnard refugees from Vietnam.

The experience of community farming and direct marketing at farmers markets provided a unique opportunity to experience a community strengthened by connecting consumers with fresh produce and local food growers. My duties in the Community Farm and City Market Project included:

  • monitoring and troubleshooting challenges such as pests, disease, and irrigation needs
  • providing technical assistance and distributing seeds and other needed materials to the farmers as needed
  • coordinating city market days: organizing harvests the day before market, preparing produce for sale, marketing, and managing sales on the day of market
  • data collection and organization: conducting informal interviews with participants, observing plots and noting methods used (i.e. intercropping, integrated pest management, use of trellises and other structures), logging data into Excel
